NAMS Update 6/10/21

Dear NAMS Students and Families~

I have some important information to share as we approach the final days of the school year.

  • GAPS Issued Chromebooks – Students will keep their GAPS issued Chromebooks over the summer months. Students will bring their device back to school in fall.

 

  • Registration – Please register for the upcoming school year if you have not already. This information will help us determine how many Electives and Reading Intervention classes we are able to offer.

 

  • 8th Grade Virtual Promotion – Virtual Promotion will be on Monday, June 14. The ceremony will start at 8:30 and will be streamed live on the NAMS YouTube Channel. Parents and family members may watch the ceremony through the NAMS YouTube Channel. Other important information is listed below.
    • YouTube Link – NAMS YouTube Channel We will also have a zoom link for those that wish to listen to the program in Spanish. In order to access the NAMS YouTube Channel you will need to do the following steps:
      • This link will take you straight to the live feed. The link will say “This channel does not have content” until the start of the graduation at 8:30am.
      • Zoom Link for Spanish – Zoom Link – Virtual Promotion in Spanish
    • Lunch – Lunch will be at 10:20. Students will eat outside with each other if the weather permits. If the weather is bad, then they will eat in the gym.
    • Dismissal & Parent Instructions – 8th Grade students will be dismissed at 11:00. It is important that parents remain in their cars when picking up their students.
      • The Tiger Parent Group has organized signs to be on the fences and a fun exit for kids as they walk to their cars or walk home.
      • Important – Please do not get out of your cars and gather; we will not be able to release the students if there is a gathering.
      • We will strategically release students at 11:00  from their classrooms so that there is plenty of time to find their parent’s car or start walking.
      • Students that stay at school will be involved in activities with their 8th grade teachers for the remainder of the school day.
      • Buses will not run until 2:00 at the regular dismissal time.

Tengo información importante para compartir a medida que nos acercamos a los últimos días del año escolar.

Dear NAMS Students and Families~

I have some important information to share as we approach the final weeks of the school year.

  • Class Photos – Students that participate in CDL and In-Person learning have had the opportunity to get their photo taken at recess or to submit their photo if they are in CDL classes. We compiled those pictures to create a class picture. These class pictures are only $2.00. Please have your student bring $2.00 to school to give to a grade level teacher.     • Cohorts – We have 190 8th grade students. All 190 students will be in our cafeteria, spaced 3 feet apart, as required by the RSSL from the Oregon Department of Education. CDL and AOL students will be included in this large group. Students will be seated alphabetically.
    • CDL & AOL students – On June 14, if you are a CDL or AOL student  and are attending the ceremony, then we will want you to report to the office by no later than 8:10. The office will direct students to the correct classroom. In the classroom, students will learn about where they are going to be seated and the rest of the procedures we will use during the ceremony. CDL & AOL students are welcome to stay and eat lunch.

Tengo información importante para compartir a medida que nos acercamos a las últimas semanas del año escolar.

AVID students on U of Oregon campus

AVID applications now open / Solicitudes para las clases electivas AVID ya están abiertas

GAPS AVID Presentation

Applications for next year’s AVID Elective Classes are now open!  Any student entering grades 7-11 (and 6 at Timber Ridge) is encouraged to apply to be a part of the AVID program.

To apply, please fill out the online application for your school or contact your school’s office to receive a paper application packet.

AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a program designed for students with recognized academic potential, an individual determination to succeed, and a desire to take challenging courses in high school that lead to four-year college enrollment. 

AVID students are learners who:

  • have college as a goal
  • are motivated to succeed in school
  • are willing to enroll in challenging classes 
  • work to achieve their academic goals 

It is an honor to be considered for the AVID program. If you are accepted into the program and choose to participate, you will be enrolled in the AVID elective next year. 

The AVID class is designed to provide motivated, capable students with the skills necessary to be successful in challenging courses leading to college acceptance. In the AVID class, students work to develop a variety of academic skills. Trained tutors work with students to help them explore their challenging course material more deeply and to help them develop higher-order thinking and college-level independent study skills. AVID students also hear a number of great guest speakers and participate in college and cultural field trips. 

In order to be considered for the AVID program, please complete the online AVID application or reach out to your school’s office or the district office to receive a paper application packet.  The application materials are due by May 21, 2021.

AVID, siglas en inglés que representa Progreso por Determinación Individual, es un programa diseñado para estudiantes con reconocido potencial académico, decididos para tener éxito y con deseos de tomar cursos desafiantes en la Preparatoria que conducen al ingreso a la universidad de cuatro años. 

Los estudiantes de AVID son estudiantes que:

  •     Tienen la universidad como un objetivo

Greetings, GAPS Families!

Welcome to the first week with our expanded in-person learning for all students in K-12!  We are so pleased to have extended time each day and/or more days each week with our students.  We know the adjustment may be exciting for some and stressful for others, so we are paying close attention to the specific supports your child may need.  Please be sure to continue your communication with your student(s) and their teacher(s) to help us do our very best.  We hope the updates included here will get you feeling situated for spring and provide you with timeline information you may be seeking.  Thank you for taking the time to read through and get up to speed!

2021-22 CALENDAR

Last week the GAPS Board voted on a district calendar for the 2021-22 school year. After considering three different calendar options and receiving feedback from the public, the Board selected calendar option A, which closely resembles the typical school calendar that the district has traditionally utilized. The complete academic calendar is linked on the Academic Calendar page on the district website and available here: English | Spanish.

COVID-19 UPDATE

On Friday Governor Brown and the Oregon Health Authority (OHA) shared that Oregon is facing a significant surge in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations. Based on case counts and state hospital bed patients, the Governor announced on Tuesday that Linn County, topping the 200 cases per 100,000 limit with 263.9 cases per 100,000 in the document linked above, will move to the Extreme Risk category on Friday.  

The announcement does not impact the operation of schools, as the Governor’s Executive Order 21-06 calling for in-person instruction stands. According to the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) transmission in school environments remains very rare in our state. GAPS continues to follow all Ready Schools, Safe Learners guidance and plans to continue to offer in-person learning with Linn County returning to the Extreme Risk level. 

However, athletics participation and attendance will be impacted by this change as soon as Friday (potentially including Friday evening games) based on state Risk Level mandates. In the Extreme Risk level, capacity for outdoor sports is limited to just 50 people. Indoor events are limited to just six. This will significantly limit sports participation and spectators. GAPS supports these safety measures but also does not have the authority to waive them. 

We will continue to prioritize maximizing student-athlete and student performances participation while considering attendance numbers. Our practices for determining and allocating spectator tickets remains unchanged, but the number of tickets forwarded will be significantly reduced. As described previously, we will favor participation over viewing. Where spectators are limited, we will prioritize each participant receiving 1 ticket (seniors first). Athletic Directors are consistently applying the District’s prioritization to align with State requirements. Schools and coaches will inform participants of student-athlete and spectator changes for their teams. Due to differences in our facilities and schedules, each event may differ in the outcome, but the approach is the same.

It is also important to note that if our counties are still in the Extreme Level as we move closer to graduation, those ceremonies may also be impacted. The dramatic rise in cases is a reminder that the pandemic has not yet been contained, and all of us must continue to wear face coverings, keep physical distancing, and limit group gatherings. Quarantining is a key protective measure and we greatly appreciate the cooperation of our students and staff that have had to take that period of time to ensure that outbreaks remain limited. 

Every Oregonian age 16 and older can now sign up to get their vaccine, which have proven to be incredibly safe and effective. OHA reports that the overwhelming majority of our new COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are people who have not yet been vaccinated. Safe and effective vaccines are the key to achieving community immunity from COVID-19 and returning to normal life as soon as possible.

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION 

Kindergarten Registration for the 2021-22 school year opens next Monday, May 3! Consistent with district policy: A student will be admitted to kindergarten if his/her fifth birthday occurs on or before September 1, or is a kindergarten student transferring from a public school in another district. A student will be admitted to first grade if his/her sixth birthday occurs on or before September 1, is a first grade student transferring from a public school in another district, or has completed a successful year in a public school kindergarten.*

*Note: Students with a summer birthday (June-August) have the option of waiting to enroll in Kindergarten. If a student has already completed KG, that student is not eligible to repeat KG and will be enrolled in first grade.

School Board Forum

The School Board Special Election is coming up on Tuesday, May 18. 

On Tuesday, May 4, at 7:00 p.m., the Linn County Unit of the League of Women Voters of Oregon and South Albany High School will hold an online election forum for GAPS board candidates. The forum will take place on Zoom. Debate students from South and West Albany high schools will moderate, posing questions prepared in the schools’ history classes.

The eight candidates for the GAPS school board have all been invited to participate in the forum. They are Frank Bricker (zone 1), Alison Ecker (at-large, #2), Clarice Law (zone 1), Pete J. Morse (at-large, #2), Denee Newton-Vasquez (at-large, #2), Roger Nyquist (zone 2), Willard Sheppy (zone 2), and Brad Wilson (zone 1).

La semana pasada, la Mesa Directiva de GAPS votó sobre un calendario del distrito, para el año escolar 2021-22. Después de considerar tres opciones de calendario diferentes y recibir comentarios del público, la Mesa Directiva seleccionó la opción de calendario A, que se parece mucho al calendario escolar típico que el distrito ha utilizado tradicionalmente. ACTUALIZACIÓN SOBRE COVID-19

El viernes, la Gobernadora Brown y la Autoridad de Salud de Oregón (OHA por sus siglas en inglés) compartieron que Oregón se enfrenta a un aumento significativo de casos y hospitalizaciones de COVID-19. Basados en el conteo de casos, pacientes en camas de hospitales estatales la Gobernadora anuncio el martes que el condado de Linn, superando el límite de 200 casos por 100,000 con 263.9 casos por 100,000 en el documento vinculado anteriormente, se moverá al límite Categoría de riesgo el viernes.

El anuncio no afecta el funcionamiento de las escuelas, ya que se mantiene la Orden ejecutiva 21-06 de la Gobernadora que pide instrucción en persona. Según el Departamento de Educación de Oregón (ODE por sus siglas en ingles), la transmisión en entornos escolares sigue siendo muy poco común en nuestro Estado. GAPS continúa siguiendo todas las guías de Ready Schools, Safe Learners (Escuelas preparadas, estudiantes seguros) y planes para continuar ofreciendo aprendizaje en persona con el condado de Linn regresando al nivel de riesgo extremo.

Sin embargo, la participación y la asistencia a deportes se verán afectadas por este cambio, tan pronto como el viernes (incluyendo potencialmente los juegos del viernes por la noche) según los mandatos estatales de Nivel de riesgo. En el nivel de Riesgo Extremo, la capacidad para deportes al aire libre está limitada a solo 50 personas. Los eventos bajo techo están limitados a solo seis. También es importante tener en cuenta que, si nuestros condados todavía se encuentran en el Nivel Extremo a medida que nos acercamos a la graduación, esas ceremonias también pueden verse afectadas. El aumento dramático de casos es un recordatorio de que la pandemia aún no se ha contenido y que todos debemos seguir cubriéndonos la cara, mantener el distanciamiento físico y limitar las reuniones grupales. La cuarentena es una medida de protección clave y agradecemos enormemente la cooperación de nuestros estudiantes y personal que, han tenido que tomarse ese período de tiempo para asegurarse de que los brotes sigan siendo limitados.

Todos los habitantes de Oregón de 16 años o más ahora pueden inscribirse para recibir su vacuna, que ha demostrado ser increíblemente segura y eficaz. La OHA informa que la inmensa mayoría de nuestros nuevos casos y hospitalizaciones de COVID-19, son personas que aún no han sido vacunadas. Las vacunas seguras y efectivas son la clave para lograr la inmunidad comunitaria contra COVID-19 y regresar a la vida normal lo antes posible.

INSCRIPCIÓN PARA KÍNDER

¡Las inscripciones para el Kínder para el año escolar 2021-22 comienzan el próximo lunes 3 de mayo! De acuerdo con la política del distrito: un estudiante será admitido al Kínder, si cumple cinco años el 1 de septiembre o antes, o si es un estudiante de Kínder, que se transfiere de una escuela pública en otro distrito. Un estudiante será admitido a primer grado si su sexto cumpleaños ocurre el 1 de septiembre o antes, es un estudiante de primer grado que se transfiere de una escuela pública en otro distrito o ha completado un año exitoso en el Kínder de una escuela pública. *

*Nota: Los estudiantes con un cumpleaños durante el verano (junio-agosto) tienen la opción de esperar para inscribirse en el Kínder. Si un estudiante ya completó Kínder, ese estudiante no es elegible para repetir Kínder y se inscribirá en primer grado.

Foro de la Mesa Directiva

La Elección especial para la Mesa Directiva está aproximándose el martes 18 de mayo.

El martes 4 de mayo a las 7:00 p.m., la Unidad del Condado de Linn de la Liga de Mujeres Votantes de Oregón y la preparatoria South Albany High School llevará a cabo un foro electoral en línea para los candidatos a la Mesa Directiva de GAPS. El foro tendrá lugar a través de la plataforma Zoom. Estudiantes de la clase de Debate de las preparatorias South y West Albany moderarán y plantearán preguntas preparadas en las clases de historia de las escuelas.

Los ocho candidatos a la Mesa Directiva de GAPS han sido invitados a participar en el foro. Ellos son Frank Bricker (zona 1), Alison Ecker (en general, # 2), Clarice Law (zona 1), Pete J.
