Juneteenth is the oldest nationally recognized celebration of the ending of slavery in the U.S. On June 19, 1865, Galveston, Texas, learned of the Emancipation Proclamation, that the war had ended, and that slaves were now free. This news reached Galveston almost 2 and 1/2 years after the Emancipation Proclamation was made by President Lincoln on January 1, 1863.
