Dear NAMS Families,
I hope this (long) letter finds you and your loved ones doing well. We are certainly in a time of stress, unfamiliar territory, and new style of school. I hope this letter helps clear up some common questions we are getting. If not, please feel free to email me at stephanne.seals@albany.k12.or.us.
Distance Learning and Materials
First, I’ll try to explain what Distance Learning will look like, and our process for follow up at NAMS. This is what you need to know:
- Workbooks have been sent out to the mailing addresses of all middle school aged students. If your mail address has changed, or you don’t receive a workbook by Monday, April 13, then please email Penny Knowlton at penny.knowlton@albany.k12.or.us
- 6th and 7th grade – students will receive one workbook for their grade level. Each workbook has learning for Math, Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts (plus other cool content). These workbooks are where the graded assignments will come from for the remainder of the school year.
- 8th grade – students will receive several items: a Math workbook, a Language Arts workbook, a Reading workbook, a Social Studies packet, and a Science packet. There will be ongoing mailings to 8th grade students as Social Studies and Science units are developed. All graded assignments for the remainder of the school year will be found in these workbooks and packets.
Process for Work Assigned
Work will be assigned in the four core subjects (Math, Science, Language Arts, and Social Studies) each week. This is the only work that is required and will be given a grade. There will be one assignment per week/per subject. How does this work?
- The student will do the work and try to submit their finished product by Friday of that week. Once submitted, the teacher will mark it in the gradebook. Assignments that are not completed will be graded “Z” in the gradebook until they are submitted. Completed assignments will receive a “1” score.
- Submitting Assignments – The current methods to submit the assigned work are:
- Google Classroom
- Email – take a picture
- Telephone call – parent says that it is completed or student reviews work with a teacher
What if you don’t have Internet or a Device? – We know that we have a fair number of families that don’t have the ability to submit assignments electronically. Each student will receive a telephone call from a staff member each week. The purpose of this phone call is to check in with the student, answer any questions about the assignments for that week, and to verify that assignments are completed.
This process will then repeat itself week after week until the end of the school year.
Technology
We have received requests for technology from some families. The district is distributing Chromebooks to students as quickly as possible. Phase 1 is to get devices into the hands of high school students because of graduation requirements. We are almost done with that process. Phase 2 is to get devices into the hands of students that receive Special Education and English Language Learner services. I’m not yet sure what that will look like. Phase 3, depending on how many devices are left in the District, MAY be a middle school checkout of chromebooks.
Special Education and 504 Students
Case managers for students receiving Special Education services will be reaching out to their students. They will communicate how Specially Designed Instruction will be delivered. This is such a different type of learning environment. We understand that adjustments will need to be made. If you have questions about this, you can email Brian Sikora at brian.sikora@albany.k12.or.us.
Students who receive services through a 504 Plan will be contacted by their case managers, if they have not already. 504 Plan case managers are Debbie Fifield for last names A-L and Amanda Peterson for last names M-Z. Many of the 504 Plans have in-class accommodations that do not require anything for Distance Learning. However, if there is something that your student needs, please contact that case manager. Locker Cleanout
Middle School administrators are working on a plan for students to retrieve their personal belongings. This will be a little complicated since we are still under Social Distancing orders. With 580 students, we thank you in advance for your patience and flexibility. We will create a plan that allows for students to retrieve their items in the safest way possible for you and our staff. As the plan is solidified, I will let our NAMS community know the details.
In Closing
We thank you in advance for your patience and flexibility as we work through an entirely new way to conduct school. We have not been through anything like this in our lifetimes. The closest thing I can think of is 9/11 or what Katrina did to Louisiana and other Gulf Coast areas. Here is an interesting and applicable quote from some teachers who went through Hurricane Katrina. I don’t have the source, but still found it to be something we need to keep in mind. Our kids are incredibly resilient.
“Hurricane Katrina taught the teachers on the Gulf Coast that an interrupted year is not the end of the world, It’s OK if you don’t get to cover all of the content. It’s OK if your grades are inflated because you can’t test as normal. It’s OK if your students are not able to complete the coursework as assigned. We worried that missing part of the year would have lasting effects, but it didn’t. Our Katrina Kids are doctors, lawyers, teachers, hairdressers, nurses, business owners, engineers, you name it-they are doing it, all over the world. Don’t sweat what is probably insignificant, but embrace the opportunity to stay connected with your students in order to build relationships and to reinforce a sense of normalcy for them. Developing skills for the next level of success takes many forms, so don’t worry, you’ve got this!”

Aprendizaje a distancia y materiales
Primero, intentaré explicar cómo se verá el aprendizaje a distancia y nuestro proceso de seguimiento en NAMS. Esto es lo que necesitas saber:
- Se han enviado libros de trabajo a las direcciones postales de todos los estudiantes de secundaria. Si su dirección de correo ha cambiado, o no recibe un libro de trabajo antes del lunes 13 de abril, envíe un correo electrónico a Penny Knowlton a knowlton@albany.k12.or.us
- 6to y 7mo grado: los estudiantes recibirán un libro de trabajo para su nivel de grado. - 8vo grado – los estudiantes recibirán varios artículos: un libro de matemáticas, un libro de artes del lenguaje, un libro de lectura, un paquete de estudios sociales y un paquete de ciencias. Habrá correos continuos a estudiantes de 8º grado a medida que se desarrollen las unidades de Ciencias Sociales y Ciencias. Todas las tareas calificadas para el resto del año escolar se encontrarán en estos libros y paquetes.
Proceso de trabajo asignado
Se asignará trabajo en las cuatro materias principales (Matemáticas, Ciencias, Artes del Lenguaje y Estudios Sociales) cada semana. Este es el único trabajo que se requiere y se le dará una calificación. Habrá una tarea por semana / por materia. ¿Cómo funciona esto?
- El estudiante hará el trabajo e intentará enviar su producto terminado antes del viernes de esa semana. Una vez presentado, el maestro lo marcará en el libro de calificaciones. Las tareas que no se completen se calificarán con una “Z” en el libro de calificaciones hasta que se presenten. Las tareas completadas recibirán una puntuación de “1”.
- Envío de asignaciones: los métodos actuales para enviar el trabajo asignado son:
- Aula de Google
- Correo electrónico: toma una foto
- Llamada telefónica: el padre dice que se ha completado o que el alumno revisa el trabajo con un maestro
¿Qué pasa si no tienes Internet o un dispositivo? – Sabemos que tenemos un buen número de familias que no tienen la capacidad de enviar tareas electrónicamente. Cada estudiante recibirá una llamada telefónica de un miembro del personal cada semana. El propósito de esta llamada telefónica es verificar con el estudiante, responder cualquier pregunta sobre las tareas de esa semana y verificar que las tareas se hayan completado.
Este proceso se repetirá semana tras semana hasta el final del año escolar.
Tecnología
Hemos recibido solicitudes de tecnología de algunas familias. El distrito está distribuyendo Chromebooks a los estudiantes lo más rápido posible. La fase 1 es poner los dispositivos en manos de los estudiantes de secundaria debido a los requisitos de graduación. Ya casi hemos terminado con ese proceso. La Fase 2 es poner los dispositivos en manos de los estudiantes que reciben servicios de Educación Especial y Aprendizaje del Idioma Inglés. Todavía no estoy seguro de cómo se verá eso. La Fase 3, dependiendo de cuántos dispositivos quedan en el Distrito, PUEDE ser un pago de Chromebooks en la escuela intermedia.
Educación especial y 504 estudiantes
Los administradores de casos para los estudiantes que reciben servicios de Educación Especial se comunicarán con sus estudiantes. Comunicarán cómo se entregará la instrucción especialmente diseñada. Este es un tipo de ambiente de aprendizaje tan diferente. Entendemos que habrá que hacer ajustes. Aquí hay una cita interesante y aplicable de algunos maestros que pasaron por el huracán Katrina. No tengo la fuente, pero aun así creo que es algo que debemos tener en cuenta. Nuestros niños son increíblemente resistentes.

No se preocupe por lo que probablemente sea insignificante, pero aproveche la oportunidad de mantenerse conectado con sus estudiantes para construir relaciones y reforzar su sentido de normalidad. El desarrollo de habilidades para el siguiente nivel de éxito toma muchas formas, así que no te preocupes, ¡tienes esto! ”
