Last Day of School Extended

The School Board voted to make up one of the two inclement weather days from February 25th and 27th. The last day of school for students will be Thursday, June 13th. The last day for staff will be Friday, June 14th. Calendars have been updated on the district website.

Albany FIRST FLL Robotics Team #27006, the Fin-tastic Fish, Win First Place Championship Honors at 2018-2019 State Robotics Championship Tournament

FIRST FLL LEGO robotics team from Albany, the Fin-tastic Fish, FLL Team #27006, won first place honors at the 2018-2019 ORTOP State Championship Tournament in Hillsboro, OR on Sunday, January 20th, 2019.

The team took first place honors for CORE Values. They were recognized for being the tournament’s outstanding Inspiration Award winning team and were presented the Tektronix Inspiration Champions Award. The Tektronix Inspiration Award recognizes a team that displays outstanding teamwork, professionalism, and spirit, both at the tournament, as well as throughout the season. The small team of six was comprised of students from Oak Grove and NAMS.

The judges were especially impressed by the team’s humanitarian work to provide clothing for homeless families in Linn County, as well as their work with Heifer International in which the team raised and funded new aquaculture–fish farm–programs in the Philippines and Vietnam.

Finally, the team was also recognized by the tournament judges for their outstanding robot design, advanced programming abilities, and competition table mission strategies related to this year’s NASA space theme, Into Orbit. There were 400+ teams competing in Oregon this year of which 120 advanced to the state championships.

 

Boldly Going Forward

Something the team is especially proud of is their development of an edible food-based material that can be 3D printed and hydrated in space to improve both the social and mental health of people living and working in space for extended periods of time. They worked with Dr. Lining Yau from the Carnegie Mellon University, Morphing Matter Lab; the MIT Media Lab–Transformative Appetite program, NASA food specialist for the ISS, as well as a number of food industry specialist involved in 2D to 3D printing of food.

FIRST LEGO League

FIRST LEGO League® (FLL) is a science, technology, engineering, and math program for small teams of students in the 4th-8th grades. FIRST LEGO League challenges teams to solve a real-world (space) problem with their own innovative solution and to design, build, and program a LEGO robot to autonomously manipulate LEGO models in no more than 2:30 minutes. Team members do all the work while being guided by mentors and their adult coaches.

APSF Awards $40,000 to GAPS teachers

The Albany Public Schools Foundation awarded $40,000 in classroom grants during the month of November.  Funded projects ranged from electronics, to materials for art, reading, music and physical education. Grant applicants have received their grant status notification letters.

Primary funding for the Classroom Grant Program comes from three Albany Public School Foundation events: iSwim for Kids, iCelebrate Kids Benefit Gala and the iRun for Kids race.

Fundación de las escuelas públicas de Albany (APSF por sus siglas en inglés) otorga $40,000 a maestros de GAPS

La Fundación de las Escuelas Públicas de Albany, otorgó $40,000 en subvenciones para los salones de clases durante el mes de noviembre. Los proyectos financiados van desde electrónica, hasta materiales para arte, lectura, música y educación física. Los solicitantes de subvenciones han recibido sus cartas de notificación de estado de concesión.

La financiación principal para el Programa de Subvenciones de Aula, proviene de tres eventos de la Fundación de Escuelas Públicas de Albany: “iSwim for Kids” (Evento de natación), la Gala de Beneficios de “iCelebrate Kids” (Evento recreativo) y “iRun for Kids” (Evento de carreras).

2019 Best School Districts in Oregon

A company called Niche researches U.S. colleges, schools, neighborhoods, and companies. They recently released their school district rankings. The 2019 Best School Districts ranking is based on rigorous analysis of key statistics and millions of reviews from students and parents using data from the U.S. Department of Education. Ranking factors include state test scores, college readiness, graduation rates, SAT/ACT scores, teacher quality, public school district ratings, and more. Greater Albany Public Schools ranked #8 in the state of Oregon with an Overall Niche Grade of B+.

GAPS Co-Sponsoring Bullying Prevention Presentation

Linn Together, a countywide network of volunteers with the mission to strengthen local prevention networks, has partnered with several local organizations, including GAPS, to present “Bullying Prevention in School and Cyber Settings”.   Parents, school staff, and other adults in the community can help kids prevent bullying. Join national bullying expert Dr. Michael Sulkowski, PhD, University of Arizona, for an interactive presentation on bullying prevention in both school and cyber settings.
