A new principal has been selected for the position at North Albany Elementary School. Kilee Sowa, formerly a dean of students at Memorial Middle School, will replace Tracy Day.
The following is the announcement by Superintendent Jim Golden:
I am happy to announce that we have selected one of our own for the position of principal of North Albany Elementary School. Kilee Sowa has been serving as the Dean of Students at Memorial Middle School for the last five years. where she facilitated the Behavior team, PBIS and coordinated AVID.
Those who work closely with Kilee describe her as a natural leader who makes strong connections with staff, students and parents. They see her as organized, positive and a model of adult learning.
Kilee has spent the last year working closely with elementary principals and she has shown that she is ready to move into a leadership position in her own building. Please welcome Kilee to our elementary principal ranks.
Adjustments have been made to the bell schedules at all schools. The changes will be in place when school starts in the fall.
The changes will reduce differences in start and stop times among same-level schools. Elementary schools will be in two bell schedule groups rather than nine different schedules, and they will gain 20 minutes of instructional time per day. Middle schools will all start and stop at the same time.
Research has shown that students benefit from more sleep, but the natural sleep and wake cycles are later for older students and earlier for younger students. Adjusting the schedule will allow older students to start a little later in the day.
The changes are also expected to make the district transportation system more efficient.
